Indiana - Illegal Imm Bill filed
Illegal Immigration Bill Filed in State Senate
By Liz Thomas/Network Indiana
1/6/2010
State Senator Mike Delph (R-Carmel) wants to make illegal immigration a priority during this latest Indiana legislative session.
Delph has filed a bill in hopes of increasing the verification of citizenship for government workers and individuals who receive state unemployment benefits.
The measure requires all state agencies and local governments to use the e-verify system to check work eligibility status of all newly hired employees.
It would prohibit those entities from entering into or renewing a public contract unless the contractor and subcontractors verify they do not employ illegal immigrants.
Delph says this year's version has provisions aimed at saving tax dollars by requiring the Indiana Department of Labor to verify citizenship before determining eligibility for unemployment benefits.
