HOLLAND -- A 22-year-old Indiana man who planned to move to Grand Rapids died after his car rolled over in the median of Int. 196 south of Holland, apparently after he became startled by a passing vehicle.

Alberto Carrillo-Samano, a Mexican citizen who was staying with family in Lowell, Ind., died when the roof of the Ford Escort he was driving was crushed by the rolling vehicle.

Allegan County sheriff's investigators said Carrillo-Samano was driving north on Int. 196 just south of the U.S. 31 split when he lost control of the car about 8:35 a.m. Witnesses following behind the car told police the driver was traveling in the inside lane of the freeway as a car began to slowly pass him on the right.

One witness told police the Escort driver swerved left, possibly startled by the passing vehicle.

The Escort skidded sideways in the lane, then began to roll in the median before landing on its the roof.

Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Kuhn said Carrillo-Samano was wearing his seatbelt, but the roof damage was severe. Police found a Mexican visa in the man's belongings and said he did not have a driver's license from any U.S. state.

Kuhn said driver inexperience may have been a factor in the crash.

Investigators, who talked to relatives in Indiana, said Carrillo-Samano was coming to Grand Rapids to look for housing and planned to get a driver's license.
