July 27, 2008 Citizens Set to Demonstrate in Postville in Favor of Immigration Enforcement In addition to Iowans, supporters of immigration enforcement will travel to Postville from Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and New Jersey.

"We will be there on Sunday to show that millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules applaud efforts to finally enforce our nation's immigration laws," said Susan Tully, national field director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). FAIR is the nation's largest immigration reform organization, with some 250,000 members nationwide.

The demonstration in favor of ICE enforcement is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. at the Postville City Hall at 145 S. Lawler Street. Susan Tully will be in Postville on Sunday to coordinate the demonstration in support of the ICE enforcement efforts. She will be available to speak to the media to present the pro-enforcement viewpoint.

At a meeting here Saturday, three members of the House Hispanic Caucus — including its chairman, Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill.
Ironic, isn't it, especially since Rep. Gutierrez and the Hspanic Caucus don't support E-verify! Much of this could have been avoided had the plant been required to utilize the E-verify program. The Hispanic Caucus needs to wake up to the reality of the situation.

    Two more arrests at Agriprocessors
By Lynda Waddington 9/9/08 1:28 PM
Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested two more employees at Agriprocessors this morning. Although names of the employees have not yet been released, it has been confirmed that they were employed in the human resources department.

The two are expected to have their initial federal court appearance this afternoon in Cedar Rapids.

Two middle-management supervisors — Martin De La Rosa-Loera and Juan Carlos Guerrero-Espinoza — pleaded guilty in federal court last month to charges of encouraging illegal immigration. The documents filed by prosecutors in those cases indicated that during the raid agents seized several fraudulent permanent alien resident cards from the human resources offices at the plant.

Authorities continue to search for a third supervisor, Hosam Amara. The indictment listing specific charges against Amara remains sealed.

Agriprocessors, which was the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant prior to a massive May 12 immigration raid, is located in Postville, a small northeastern Iowa town. Today, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office filed a complaint and affadavit in Allamakee County that charged the company and five individuals with more than 9,000 child labor law violations.

Spokespersons with the company have not returned a request for comment.

USA TODAY Online version of the facts

Iowa accuses meatpacking plant of 9K child-labor law violations

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced today that he is charging the owner and four managers at the nation's largest kosher meatpacking plant with violating state child-labor laws.

"The complaint alleges a total of 9,311 child labor violations, involving 32 youths under the age of 18," the attorney general's office says in a statement. Seven of the minors were under the age of 16 when they worked for Agriprocessors Inc., the statement says.

In May, federal immigration agents raided the plant and detained hundreds of workers suspected of being in the country illegally.

Plant managers are due in court tomorrow. The Des Moines Register, a fellow Gannett newspaper, says it's trying to reach them for comment.
