Iowan admits lying about illegal-immigrant worker
Friday, April 6, 2012 5:17 am |
A 30-year-old eastern Iowa man faces up to five years in federal prison for lying to an immigration agent.
Federal prosecutors say Richard Weber, of Dubuque, pleaded guilty Thursday. Weber admitted lying to an agent of the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The agent was inquiring about an illegal immigrant who worked for Weber's concrete business.
Officials say Weber told the agent in February 2010 that the worker had been laid off about two months earlier and that Weber had not talked to the worker since. Officials say that, in fact, the illegal immigrant was still working for Weber and had talked to Weber that same day.
The worker fled and avoided apprehension by immigration authorities.
Weber's sentencing date has not been set.
