Jamiel's Law didn't make it Signatures Stolen ???
Anti-gang measure won't make May ballot in LA
The Associated Press 12:47 p.m. December 11, 2008
LOS ANGELES — The city clerk's office says backers of a measure that would increase immigration checks on gang members suspected of being in the country illegally have failed to gather enough signatures to put it on the May ballot.
Maria Garcia, a spokeswoman for the city clerk's elections division, said Thursday supporters turned in nearly 19,000 signatures – about 55,000 fewer than required.
Garcia says proponents initially claimed to have gathered about 76,000 signatures.
The proposed measure was named "Jamiel's Law" for a high school football player who was shot and killed March 2. Prosecutors say the man accused of killing him was in the country illegally.
Shaw's father says he is disappointed but intends to pursue a similar law at the county level.
