Granato, Lee clash over fate of illegal immigrants

Washington • The top candidates for Utah’s open Senate seat sound fairly similar when they start talking about immigration — that is, until they discuss what should happen to the millions of people now in the country illegally.

Simply put, Democrat Sam Granato sees a place in this nation for the millions of undocumented workers among us, while Republican Mike Lee wants each one to return to their homelands and apply through existing legal channels.

One of these men stand to become Utah’s next senator, replacing Republican Bob Bennett, who lost his bid for a fourth term. Early polls and decades of recent political history give a decisive edge to Lee, but Granato says he is fighting for independent and disaffected GOP voters, who support a more moderate stance.
