Judge: U.S. broke its own immigration law
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Los Angeles ruled the U.S. government broke its own immigration laws by not informing some Salvadoran detainees of their rights.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Morrow upheld a 1988 injunction requiring Salvadorans be advised of their rights to apply for political asylum and have access to legal representation, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

In her ruling, Morrow cited one study showing fewer than 10 percent of immigrants at the San Ysidro, Calif., port of entry were advised of their right to apply for asylum and other data showing some centers' phones were out of service or calls were cut off abruptly.

U.S. Department of Justice officials said they plan to appeal the decision, officials said, as the 1988 injunction pertained to Salvadorans fleeing the civil war in their country and that war has ended.

In 2005, the department unsuccessfully argued the situation in El Salvador had changed and that Salvadoran immigrants didn't deserve special treatment, the report said.
