Presidential hopefuls back SC immigration law

COLUMBIA -- Presidential hopefuls on Tuesday criticized the U.S. Justice Department's lawsuit against a new illegal immigration law in South Carolina.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachman said federal officials aren't enforcing immigration laws adequately and states need to act. The criticism comes as candidates burnish credentials ahead of Nov. 12 debate in Spartanburg that will focus on national security issues.

Republican Gov. Nikki Haley signed the illegal immigration legislation into law in June, but it doesn't go into effect until Jan. 1, about three weeks before polls open for the first-in-the-South presidential primary.

Under the law, South Carolina police have to check immigration status with federal officials if they've stopped or detained someone for some other reason.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said the lawsuit filed Monday is aimed at protecting the federal government's constitutional role in enforcing immigration laws and ensuring people are treated equally. The lawsuit names Haley, the daughter of immigrants from India, as a defendant.

The American Civil Liberties also has filed a lawsuit challenging the law.

Perry said in a statement that he strongly supports South Carolina's law "in light of the federal government's failure to secure our borders and deal with this important public safety issue. Because the federal government has not secured the border, each state is left to find ways to protect its citizens and communities."

Bachmann said the "Obama Administration has failed miserably in achieving border security, so shame on them for taking legal action against states who have been forced to do the job for them."

This is another reason we need to remove the traitor from the whitehouse. Obama and his sheep are doing everything they can to pander to the illegals and especially LaRaza and latino groups.. Its time they are removed from office and a new wave of tougher immigration enforcers put in to replace them. America also needs a new "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" program....meaning all deported persons MUST take their kids with them as well.
