Kaine rips federal immigration enforcement

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine decried as "outrageous" this morning that local and states governments have to pick up the enforcement of immigration law because of a "real bankruptcy at the federal level."

Speaking on WTOP-FM radio in Washington, Kaine blasted the federal government for its failure to tackle the hot-button topic of immigration, which many believe will emerge as an issue in this fall's legislative elections.

"It's an outrage that the federal government has basically had a consensus that the existing immigration laws don't work, won't enforce them, won't come up with a set of laws that they are willing to enforce," Kaine said.

"It's outrageous that this issue keeps getting pushed off on cities and counties and states because it's not a good issue to have a patchwork of a million different sets of regulations."

Kaine's comments came as the Commission on Immigration was to hold its first meeting and another meeting was taking place of a Virginia State Crime Commission task force on the effects of illegal immigration on the criminal justice system.
