Few takers in S.D. for turn-yourself-in immigrants

SAN DIEGO – The federal government's pilot program that gives illegal immigrants up to 90 days to leave the country has received few takers in the five cities in which it is being offered, including San Diego.

So far six people have registered: a Mexican national in San Diego; two Indians and a Guatemalan in Chicago; a Salvadoran in Charlotte, N.C.; and an Estonian national in Phoenix. None registered in Santa Ana.

The program began Aug. 5 and goes through Aug. 22. It offers the estimated 457,000 illegal immigrants with outstanding deportation orders and no criminal records a chance to turn themselves in.
In exchange, immigrants will eliminate the risk of sudden arrest and deportation.

Despite the low turnout, the government said it wasn't ready to say whether the program was a success or failure.

Personally, I don't think Lou should be making fun of the program. It may not work but at least ICE came forward with something that would answer all the cry baby illegal advocates that keep screaming about the separation of families.

Although part of this program may be explicit in it's ends, other aspects may be designed to deal with the more intangible and implicit goals - namely, to remove the complaint of "you're separating families...<blah, blah>". This way, they have an opportunity to avoid the impromptu separation of family members . Now, when the OBL/ethnic lobby scream "you're tearing families apart!" - ICE can respond with, "well, you had a chance to avoid this, but you failed to capitalize on it".

I'm glad that someone can understand the true purpose of this program.

And, lets give it a little time to get the info out to the people who don't have English as a first language. I.C.E. is getting more inquires every day.

My first reaction to this story was "Are these 6 people 6 of the jurors in the OJ trial???" Hahhahah. Just a joke, folks!

The program wasn't explicit enough. It should be advertised as a prelude to deportation. In other words, we will give you 90 days to voluntarily self-deport...otherwise you will be subject to involuntary deportation and/or workplace raids at any time after the 90 day voluntary self deport program expires! We will not be responsible for any inconveniences resulting in the involuntary ICE deportations! Stay here at your own risk!
