Re: La Raza lauches campaign for DREAM ACT
March 26, 2009
The DREAM Act is back
A bipartisan group of lawmakers today introduced legislation that would offer a narrow legalization program for illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children and have stayed in school and out of trouble.
Supporters of the legislation, first introduced in 2001, say it would offer an estimated 65,000 children, teens and young adults the opportunity to become legal residents and get on a path toward citizenship. More from supporters here.
"The DREAM Act would fix one of the clearest examples of America's nonsensical immigration laws," said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America's Voice, an immigrant advocacy organization. "For too long, high school valedictorians and college graduates have been unable to fully live up to their potential."
Opponents have called such legislation "The Bad Dream Amnesty Act" in the past. More from them here.
The Senate bill was introduced today by Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, and Richard Lugar, a Republican from Indiana. U.S. Reps. Howard Berman, D-Calif., and Lincoln Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., introduced the House measure.
