    Latin American foreign ministers

I just watched a presentation by the foreign ministers of Latin American countries on CSPAN2.

This is the jist of all the presentations -

US has sole right to decide its immigration policies and has the right to enforce its border security laws ---- BUT any decisions should be taken bilaterally, and US should respect human rights (the rights of the immigrants). The COMPREHENSIVE immigration reform will take care of human trafficking and exploitation of immigrant labor.

Does anyone see the talking from both sides of their mouths. There was no explanation of what they mean by comprehensive reform. But it is not hard to see what they mean - amnesty to illegal immigrants, and their influence in deciding how many are legally allowed to come.

I saw the representatives of Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua - and could not watch any more. This forum was organised by Migration Policy Institute.

Hey if we must let Illegal Aliens into Our country and allow them to become citizens then why not show Our countries displeasure with Mexico and only allow those that have already started the Process Legally to step to the Head of the Line. Then after those people we only allow Aliens from (Other countries then Mexico) to begin the Process. Mexico should have to change its own process and laws to accomodate everyone also. I know this sounds racist but it is not. All it would be ment to do is to help force a change in another countries policy as Mexico is always trying to force a change in Ours.

I think that's really nice of them to allow us to secure our borders...o...and lovely to have comprehensive immigration reform.

    What good neighbors!!

Since they're going communist/socialist big time they should stay home and mind their own business.

I started watching CNN later and the program was still going on. At the end there was a short Q/A session. One Migration Policy Institute staffer asked the panelists their thoughts about increasing economic opertunities in their own countries. Nobody had a good reply. The rep from Panama tried to answer but could only come up with the answer that CAFTA will improve the lives of people in his country. The panel moderator Hakim thanked him for a great reply.

By the way, yesterday on Lou Dobbs, an organiser of May 1st rallies was complaining that the reason illegal immigration has increased from Mexico is because NAFTA is taking away work from Mexicans. I have heard same arguments from Derrick Jackson who writes for Boston Globe, and is a big supporter of amnesty. So who is telling the truth - leaders of these countries who say that immigration to US will be lower as "free trade agreements " take hold, or those who complain that these agreements are driving them out of work?
