    History repeats...

The Roman Empire; classic example of an advanced society collapsing under the weight of it's own ignorance, debauchery, and betrayal. The United States has rumbled down that same path ever since the LSD-dropping, mushroom-taking, orgy-participating days of the 1960's toasted the brains of much of our current leadership.

What good is representative government if you're dead?

Over 30 brands of toothpaste containing diethylene glycol...
    Pet food...
    Meat (uh, cardboard...)
Dozens of products made with wheat gluten...
Roughly 100 different toys from multiple toy companies...
    Fireworks...
    Picnic tables...
    Weight benches...
    Propane heaters...
    Christmas lights...
    Crayons...
    Disposable cigarette lighters...
    Laptop computer batteries...
    Surge protectors...

    The list is lengthy...

All of these products bear the label "Made in China". They are capable of causing such carnage as lead poisoning, kidney failure, burns, fires, explosions, choking hazards, and crushing injuries. All of these products can, and some of these things have already led to American deaths.

Many of these products bear trusted names that Americans grew up with, such as Fisher Price, Mattel, Nautilus, and Muppets. In one of the dozens of cases of tainted toothpaste, counterfeit product originating in China was falsely labeled as Colgate and sold at discount stores in the US.

    It's the economy, stupid...

More precisely, it's the global, free-trade economy that whisked thousands of jobs away to "developing" nations. The one that gives us the illusion that our markets are really open to the real beneficiaries of global free trade, such as India, China, Mexico, and some Central American nations.

We gave China economic incentives and trade concessions. We engaged in military, technological and cultural exchanges so they would modernize their economic structure. In return, we get cargo ships full of rubber dog shit, antifreeze in our toothpaste, and dead dogs and cats... Thanks China. You and your neighbors may serve them up for dinner (giving new meaning to the word chow), but in much of the US, they're family.

Baby-boomers have failed miserably once again. Liberal and conservative. Democrat and Republican.

Clearly, political and economic considerations are trumping the well being of US consumers. Our government sells reserve oil to other countries while gas prices spike, putting the screws to good people who are struggling.

We pay farmers not to grow crops on their land.

    We now outsource nearly everything.

Ours is now largely a service economy. Our employment base now consists of politicians and government workers, elitists such as lawyers, investors, actors, media/Hollywood types, and the rest is primarily service oriented jobs, such as in health care, construction, social services or retail. Some of these jobs can produce a decent wage, many others pay minimum wage, or are temporary, seasonal, or subject to frequent layoffs. There are a few skilled professions left, but they're all disappearing fast.

We produce and manufacture virtually nothing.

We have become a nation of consumers. We even import products made from Chinese wheat. If we don't even have the political or economic will to sustain our own population with this most primitive staple, instead of relying on others because it is cheaper or more politically expedient, we won't last very long.

Just what exactly is this generation of (uh) leaders doing to protect this nation?

It's not Osama bin Laden that we need to worry about. It's that asylum-seeking refugee with no criminal record and a serious grudge. It's the dissolution of our border. It's that pet food made with Chinese wheat gluten. It's that bright, shiny toy oozing toxic lead some unsuspecting lady just bought for her child. Or that weight bench collapsing, resulting in that 250 lb. bar crushing that poor chap's windpipe.

    It's the globalism, stupid.

These are not mistakes. Through substandard materials, deliberate sabotage, poor workmanship or quality control, our children and animals are being poisoned so that these crooks can achieve higher yields. Hardly the first time Chinese food product was tainted. In the mid to late 90's, there was a rash of incidents where Chinese sidewalk food vendors even poisoned innocent consumers while targeting each other to in efforts to eliminate the competition.

Our government has lost complete control of the ability to screen incoming cargo or agricultural products -much less our own food supply- for diseases, biological, or design safety hazards. We are dangerously exposed. On top of all that, thousands of people want to kill us, mother nature is in menopause, our border is dissolving, and our infrastructure is crumbling. And Democrats want oversight hearings...

"Buying American" is no longer possible. If we don't start considering the law of unintended consequences, "Being American" won't be possible either.

    Author's notes***

1). On a Fox News broadcast 8/5/07, there were reports that US toy designers are even downgrading their "lead-free" designs in their product in order to make toy production cheaper.

2). According to Consumer Product Safety Commission statistics, at least half of the product recalls due to lead since 1977 have been in the last three years. As a country, we removed lead from nearly everything years ago. We also eradicated tuberculosis and many other infectious diseases. Now we're letting them all back in. Once again, history repeats...
