The initial deployment followed a severe, fatal runway collision at LaGuardia Airport involving an Air Canada Express jet, which caused widespread flight cancellations and compounded massive security checkpoint delays caused by a concurrent funding standoff in Congress. While the administration officially tasked the unmasked ICE agents with aiding understaffed TSA lines, monitoring exit/entrance doors, and handling crowd control, President Trump noted that agents could also make arrests, sparking widespread public anxiety and clashes with press photographers.
