Letters to Editor (Dallas Morning News)

Do illegal aliens pay for their keep? Here's how most citizens feel, even though this one's been kept PC (progressively correct).

    A taxing debate
Re: "Aliens pay taxes, too," by Roy Martinez, Wednesday Letters.
Mr. Martinez's thinking that illegal immigrants paying taxes is absurd. Sales taxes on gas and store purchases are pennies compared to income and federal tax. I agree the government has failed in controlling the borders, but I also believe that American citizens are paying for illegal immigrants' health care and many other services. We could discuss this for hours with no agreement because it might offend someone. Free Riders

As suggested, here's a letter from the Hispanic community regarding illegal aliens.

    LICENSES FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS?
    I came here – legally – for a reason

Re: "Driving is not a privilege," by Marisa Treviño, Monday Viewpoints.

Is The Dallas Morning News printing this person's idiotic articles in an effort to have a minority person in the editorial pages, or is there a deficiency of qualified thinkers out there?

My Hispanic friends and I agree that Marisa is a disservice to our community. Those of us who immigrated legally are upset at the deferential treatment that "thinkers" like her heap on these "illegal" aliens. It is a slap in the face to those who sweated through the "legal" process to come here and live the American way.

If she thinks that giving these people a license is going to increase the number who buy insurance, she is sadly mistaken. Lack of insurance is most closely linked to economics; these people will drive without insurance, legal license or not.

People like Marisa wish that we would all just live under one commune, but let me tell you, I didn't leave my crap-infested country because it was a paradise that I wanted re-created here. Nick's Letter

Here's another letter, this time regarding the corrupt Mexican government.

It's funny how Mr. Navarrette calls Tejanos like me angry because I want to close the border to socialist Mexico. The U.S. and Mexico won't do that because Mexico cannot create enough jobs, so it exports people as a safety valve from having too many angry, young, jobless men rioting. I say close the border, let the socialist government topple from the bloated corruption that Marxism brings and bring in a pro-democracy, pro-people government. Close the Border

Mexico speaks out of both sides of its borders.

If we took Mexico's approach to border enforcement we would have herds of lawyers filing action against the Federal Government. Guatemala Returnees

Just one comment on border towns from the blogs.

I had some interesting neighbors and enjoyed the sort of melting pot - the difference was this - the guy from Africa, the family from VietNam and the people from somewhere in East Europe all WANTED TO ASSIMILATE.

These folks knew that the country they came from was a crap hole and wanted something better. They all had some interesting customs and habits, but they set them aside if it caused problems (for instance, the Vietnamese family killed and ate their dog and I told them that we didn't do that in America and so they chilled).

This new breed of Mexican, the Reconquista pukes, are very different. They not only don't want to assimilate, they expect us to just give everything up to them. Went through the same thing you did while in Houston and so we moved to the country. The stupid ass Mexicans followed and managed to destroy a nice little country/resort town - 1/4 of the town looks like Tijuana - oh boy, let's celebrate more multiculturalism! Now they are talking of "LA RECONQUISTA" and getting the whites out - even starting to fly the Mexican flag over some businesses.

What choices do we have? Should we stay and fight and go to jail, or do we just move on? Some border towns here in Texas have actually gone to Spanish only as their official language - can you believe it? Have you ever noticed that the biggest proponents of Mexican illegal immigration are either illegal aliens, border town politicians or northeastern liberals (as in Washington DC) who decry this as Washington.

I have a great idea - why don't we set up a bus service and take all these Mexicans DIRECTLY to Massachussets, Washington DC and just about any other liberal enclave. Any proponent for illegal immigration can sponsor an illegal immigrant in THEIR OWN HOME! Let them all have a big diversity celebration (bring your own AK-47 and machete)!!! Border Towns

Here we have a bluestater throwing the melting pot in our face again.

    How quickly we forget
A quick reminder to those letter writers whose resentment against immigrants has reached The Dallas Morning News in recent days: The United States has grown and prospered by accepting those in search of freedom. German, Irish, Chinese, Italians, Poles and many others have arrived as refugees, often met by the same resentment and fear that today is directed against Central American immigrants. The irony is that much of this animosity comes from those who have forgotten that their own ancestors were fortunate beneficiaries of this American dream and suffered the same persecutions upon their arrival. I hope public policy will never return to the point where human life and the pursuit of a better life for one's children are reduced to an accounting ledger with assets and liabilities. Did We Forget?
Then we have this reply from a Texan who recognizes the threat.

    Just enforce our laws
Re: "How quickly we forget," by Eric Brandler, Friday Letters.

I don't believe there is animosity for anyone who comes into this country by legal means. If Mr. Brandler is referring to illegal aliens, then all Americans should demand that our laws be enforced. The Nationality Act states, "Any alien who is present in the United States in violation of this Act or any other law is of the United States is deportable." Had this, and other laws, been enforced, there would be no need for reform – nor would we have 10,000 aliens breaching our borders daily. Citizen Reply

And here's another BM who sees a different kind of threat. Hmmm. I wonder what his guts look like.

Judging by the huge beer guts on the Minutemen "border patrol," illegal aliens have nothing to worry about. If I were a rancher, I might be concerned that some trigger-happy patriot would mistake my prize beef for a terrorist. Fat Minutemen?
