Lifeguard: Abandoned Boat May Be Involved In Smuggling

SAN DIEGO -- A 20-foot boat suspected of being used for illegal immigrant smuggling washed ashore in La Jolla early Wednesday, authorities said.

A transient reported that the vessel ran aground on the beach just south of the Children's Pool lifeguard tower about 4:20 a.m., according to the San Diego Lifeguard Service.

The witness also said about 10 people dressed in black fled from the boat when it hit the rocky reef area, said lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum, adding that none of them were immediately tracked down.

Lifejackets, fuel tanks filled with gasoline and water bottles with Hispanic logos on them led authorities to suspect that the damaged, unregistered vessel is "a likely smuggling boat," Lerum said.

The U.S. Coast Guard was investigating the incident, he added.

"a likely smuggling boat" .... either that or terrorists. But, who knows since we have little security at home.

From what I hear this happens more often than the media reports. No telling who is in this country.

Boat runs aground in La Jolla

A boat that may have been used to smuggle illegal immigrants into the United States ran aground in La Jolla this morning.

Lifeguards were notified by San Diego police about the 20-foot boat that washed up on the beach just south of the lifeguard tower at the Children's Pool at 4:20 a.m., said lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum.

Witnesses said they saw 10 people dressed in black come out of the water and run off. A search of the skipjack turned up fuel tanks and bottles of water with logos in Spanish, Lerum said. Lifejackets were strewn about.

Lifeguards, assisted by Copter One, searched the water but found no one, Lerum said. The Coast Guard and the Border Patrol have been notified and will conduct a further search of the damaged boat, he said.
