President Trump talks about the negotiations with democrats and republicans today. They met for two hours. They have been invited to gather together people to help craft a way forward to open the government and get something for border security and wall. Trade offs and compromise.
DACA is the primary focus of reporters now asking questions. President Trump is talking about a pathway to citizenship for dreamers that was about to be done in earlier discussions. He is talking about DACA in the courts and after that is resolved there will be DACA discussions combined with other things.
The president says we need more people. He says we need to keep the people who get schooled here instead of sending them back to other countries like China.
President Trump addresses reporter about eminent domain, lawsuits, and the border wall. That can be dealt with quickly. (National Emergency)
Another question posed to the president: Have you considered using emergency powers to build the wall? President says I can use national emergency to build the wall. Trying negotiations now.
When asked by a reporter, President Trump said he did make the comment in the meeting that the government could be shutdown for months or years.

I disagree with President Trump on keeping those educated here. Send them home. Let them innovate and pass along American ideas. Compete.
Third world nations especially need talent. They need educated citizens. We need the challanges of competition.Matthew 19:26

I agree. It makes me very angry for Trump to want to keep their "best" people. We do not want ANY of their people. They need to go home and keep their best and build America on their soil or these countries will never rise up and prosper.
They need to go home! They should have a "better life" on their soil.
And DACA needs to go home too with their DAPA parents. They are here illegally whether they came here 30 years ago or 30 seconds ago.
No asylum at Ports of Entry. All asylum claims should be applied for in their country, vetted, investigated, medical exam BEFORE they come here.
We cannot take in 2 million people who show up on our doorstep every year and let them roam free, when they do NOT qualify for asylum and we pay for their school, healthcare, welfare in the meantime and then they are DENIED! Diseases are going to run rampant here!
No UAC's, they are foreign children, not US citizens and they are not our responsibility! Send them immediately back into the care and custody of their President! We give them billions! Send them back.
Keep them out. Apply to come legally at their home county. Stop the massive costs to the US taxpayers!ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

Trump warns shutdown could last 'years,' says he may declare 'national emergency' to build border wall
Video of POTUS at the page link
By Adam Shaw | Fox News
Trump: We had a productive meeting with Pelosi and Schumer, we’re all on the same page of wanting to get government open
President Trump stood firm Friday on his demands for a border wall after the second White House meeting with congressional leaders this week broke up with no apparent deal, warning Democrats the partial government shutdown could last "years" and saying he could even declare a "national emergency" to bypass Congress if necessary.
“We can call a national emergency [to build a border wall] because of the security of our country,” Trump told reporters in the Rose Garden, during a lengthy and impromptu press conference.
“I may do it,” he said, before adding, “If we can do it through a negotiated process, we’re giving it a shot.”
The press conference underscored how far apart both sides are, even as Trump called the meeting "productive" and suggested the standoff could end soon -- or not. He indicated he was not shifting on his demand for more than $5 billion for funding for a wall on the southern border, saying it was necessary as the border is a "dangerous, horrible disaster."
"This is national security we’re talking about, we’re not talking about games," he told reporters. “We're not playing games, we have to do it."
Despite Trump saying conversations had "come a long way," Democrats were more dour in their assessment. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer exited saying Trump told them "he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.”
Trump later confirmed in the Rose Garden, "Absolutely I said that," while clarifying he hopes the partial shutdown doesn't last more than a few more days. He said it could be opened "very quickly" if they come to an agreement on the wall. He offered some flexibility only on what the wall would be made of, saying it could be concrete or steel.
"Steel is more expensive than the concrete, but I feel like we’re talking about steel because the other side feels better about it," he said.
Yet House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the Democrats' view is that they cannot resolve the funding dispute until the government fully opens. She said there had been progress only in the sense of a "better understanding" of each other.
Looking for an elusive resolution, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Trump agreed to designate staff to engage in negotiations with congressional leadership aides this weekend. Trump later said the group would "determine what we're going to do about the border." That group would include Vice President Pence and advisor Jared Kushner.

The meeting came on the 14th day of the shutdown, which was triggered by disagreements over the funding of Trump’s promised wall, after Democrats formally took control of the House of Representatives. Trump has said that $5 billion in funding for the wall is non-negotiable, while Democrats have said they will fund more general border security -- but not the wall.
Trump met with Democratic and Republican leaders of both chambers. Ahead of the meeting Trump sent a letter to members of Congress congratulating Pelosi on her election as speaker and calling on Congress to re-open the government.
“As we begin this new Congress, our first task should be to reopen the Government and to deliver on our highest duty as elected officials: the security of the Nation and its borders," he said. “It is the sovereign right of every nation to establish an immigration program in its national interest—lawfully admitting those who have followed the rules, while denying entry to those who break the rules or fail to meet the requirements established in law."
As part of his strategy, he made available to every member a presentation on border security that he said those present at a meeting Wednesday did not want to hear.
“Americans have endured decades of broken promises on illegal immigration. Now, is the time for both parties to rise above the partisan discord, to set aside political convenience, and to put the national interest first,” he wrote.
Democrats, meanwhile, passed legislation in the House that would fund the whole government, but not the wall. Pelosi accused Republicans of holding government workers hostage for the separate demand of a wall.
"The wall and the government shutdown really have nothing to do with each other," Pelosi said at an MSNBC Town Hall.

"There is no reason to have workers pay a price with their paycheck," she said
The legislation was immediately dismissed by Republican leadership. McConnell, R-Ky., called the bills “a time-wasting act of political posturing” and said that “a resolution will have to be palatable to House Democrats and Senate Republicans alike.”
HOUSE DEMS MOVE TO ELIMINATE ELECTORAL COLLEGE, LIMIT PRESIDENTIAL PARDON POWER AND MORE IN FIRST DAYS BACK
“We need to make policy rather than simply making political theatre,” he told reporters.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said on "Fox & Friends" earlier Friday that it would be up to Pelosi to get her party behind her, including the left flank pushing for impeachment.

“We think we're hopeful because the people that elected Nancy Pelosi didn't elect her to come up here and do nothing and didn't elect her to play political games,” she said. “They elected her to find real solutions and actually work with the president and work with all members of Congress to get things done.”
On Thursday night, Pence said on Fox News' “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that the terms of the negotiations were clear: "Bottom line, if there's no wall, there's no deal."

01-04-2019, 04:00 PM #5I do not understand why the president has not declared a national emergency since he took office. His failure to begin the wall has contributed to one million plus illegal aliens allowed to enter our nation. This has resulted in anchor babies, criminal activity, more devastation. We have the Trojan Horse children flooding in, held in detention, spread across the United States.Another question posed to the president: Have you considered using emergency powers to build the wall? President says I can use national emergency to build the wall. Trying negotiations.
Repeating it because so hard to comprehend - President Trump confirms he has legal authority to build a wall by declaring a National Emergency. The unsecured border(s) has (have) been a national emergency for a very long time. Two thousand illegal aliens apprehended each day is an EMERGENCY.
Why is the president negotiating with democrats who want no border wall and lots of amnesty. Makes zero sense.Last edited by GeorgiaPeach; 01-04-2019 at 04:06 PM.

Also, in my opinion, the visual of a big border building mission and all of the activity and people could be a strong deterrent to many who would consider crossing the border. There would undoubtedly be others though who would try to quickly cross over.

BREAKING: Trump Considering Declaring National Emergency to Secure Border Wall Funding
January 4, 2019
Cristina Laila

President Trump is considering declaring a national emergency to redirect funds from the Department of Defense and elsewhere to fund the border wall.
Via ABC News:
Sources tell ABC News the discussions are still on the “working level” adding that there’s a range of legal mechanisms that are being considered before such a decision is announced.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) emerged from a meeting with the President Friday and said Trump threatened to keep the government shut down for a long period of time — months or even years.
The Democrats are refusing to fund the border wall.
In a presser at the Rose Garden, President Trump confirmed he told Schumer during their meeting over the government shutdown that it could go on for months or even years.
The President revealed that he had considered declaring a national emergency to secure border wall funding and said, “I still might.”
The Trump administration will continue to hold meetings Friday and into the weekend to discuss the next steps going forward although it is unclear who would be a part of the ongoing meetings.
President Trump also told reporters Friday that he had a “very, very good meeting” with top Democrats and other Congressional leaders.
House Democrats passed a bill to reopen the government late Thursday night — of course this was just more showboating from the obstructionists because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell repeatedly stated he would not bring a vote on a Democrat bill that the President won’t sign.

Trump says he may call a national emergency to build border wall

President Trump said Friday that he is considering calling a national emergency to build a wall along the U.S.–Mexico border.
“We can call a national emergency because of the security of our country, absolutely. We can do it. I haven’t done it, I may do it. I may do it, but we can call a national emergency and build it quickly, it’s another way of doing it,” he said at a press conference Friday.
“If we can do it through a negotiated process, we’re giving that a shot,” he added.
Trump's comments from the White House Rose Garden came shortly after he held a closed-door White House meeting with congressional leaders on the 14th day of a partial government shutdown.
Trump also threatened to keep 25 percent of the government shut down for years until he gets his desired funding to build the border wall.
The government entered a partial shutdown on Dec. 22, leaving hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed or forced to work without pay. The shutdown began following an impasse between lawmakers and the White House over Trump's demand for billions of dollars in funding for his proposed border wall.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said earlier Friday that Trump will “designate his top people” to negotiate with congressional leaders this weekend to find a way to end the government shutdown.
Democratic leaders coming from the closed-door White House meeting said government agencies should be reopened while negotiations continue.
“We made a plea to the president once again: Don’t hold millions of Americans, hundreds of thousands of workers hostage. Open up the government and let’s continue the discussions,” Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) told reporters.
“It’s very hard to see how progress will be made unless they open up the government,” he added.
Trump told reporters at Friday's press conference that he didn't think the shutdown would last that long, saying Democrats want to make a deal.
Newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called Friday's closed-door White House meeting a "lengthy and sometimes contentious conversation with the president." She said both sides agreed to continue talks, but said Democrats don't believe a standoff can be resolved until the government is reopened.
