LONG BEACH The man killed during a gunbattle with Santa Ana
police yesterday has been positively identified as the suspect in
the shooting of two Long Beach police officers.
Long Beach police say Oscar Gallegos' identity was confirmed
today following an autopsy.
Gallegos was wanted by police in connection with Friday's
shooting of officers Roy Wade and Abe Yap during a traffic
stop.
Police say the officers were still sitting in their squad car after
pulling over the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder for running a red
light when the driver got out and opened fire. Yap was shot in
the face, Wade was shot multiple times in the chest and throat.
Yap was a nine-year department veteran. Wade had been in the
field only three weeks. Both are recovering in a hospital.
