DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Two local advocate groups for undocumented immigrants have publicly accused the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department of using DUI checkpoints to legally seize thousands of cars.

The Southern California Immigration Coalition and the South Central Neighborhood Council claim DUI checkpoints are strategically placed in and around Hispanic communities as a trap to catch unlicensed and undocumented drivers.

These groups say the state of California made $40 million in profit in 2009 from these checkpoints.

"In one impound, four cars were impounded because of drunk driving and 60 cars were impounded because of a lack of a license," said Julia Wallace of the South Central Neighborhood Council. "It's obvious to us that for one, these things are targeting working class people, undocumented immigrants, that do not have a license but are really just abiding the law otherwise and are not drunk."

However, the sheriff's department officials deny that claim.

"DUI checkpoints are used to prevent people from driving under the influence of alcohol," the department said in a statement. "It is to get people off the street -- out from behind the wheel of a car so people do not suffer tragic and totally unnecessary injuries that many times lead to death. DUI checkpoints historically have proven to be a successful tool in combating drunk drivers."

The two groups want the city of Los Angeles to adopt a policy similar to the policy in Oakland, where undocumented or unlicensed drivers are allowed to pull over and wait for a licensed driver to come and get their vehicle rather than have their vehicle impounded.

I think we should get our group to demand a policythatwhen undocumented drivers are required to pull over, they're arrested for violating US immigration law and while their car is being towed to impound, they're being hauled to deportation hearings.

Illegal aliens must be deported.

Millions are from countries where there are no laws or the laws aren't enforced as drunk driving, child molestation, rape (which are seen as rites of manhood, the age of consent is 12) and other crimes. Anti-American pro open borders and lawless organizations as LaRaza feel illegal aliens weren't subject to any of those laws in the toilets of countries from where they came so why should they for the first time in their lives be forced to act like civilized human beings by complying with our laws. I guess open borders organizations feel that following our laws is racist....idiots.....

I hope they are targeted,,, so what? They don't belong here in the first place to say nothing of being here driving drunk and endangering lives. The brainless idiots that come up with this crap never cease to amaze.

These people will never assimilate as long as these illegal immigrants rights groups are pounding sand on every Hispanic TV channel and newspaper!

What a great idea! Let the lawbreakers pay for the costs of government. The alternative is making the innocent pay.

There not in my neighborhood but this is one thing I agree with the "Lets boycott Arizona" idiotic LAPD, being that illegal aliens are mostly to blame for all drunken driving accidents around L.A.
My main problem with cops in L.A. started with them backing the boycott on Arizona, ushing in all of these illegal aliens and not wanting to be held accountable when they cost accidents on the roads, which there have been 3 in my little incororated area of west hollywood,ca alone in the past month!
