In a pre-dawn border visit with Glenn Beck on Saturday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) shared chilling details of an attack on U.S. Border Patrol agents. The attack had occurred just hours before Beck and Gohmert set out for the border, and Fox News confirmed the attack the next day.

“The Border Patrol said they had something new that they had never experienced here along the river,” Gohmert said, driving in the dark near the border on Saturday. “They were down by … one of the more popular places where people covertly cross, and they started getting .50 caliber rounds coming in. And ricochets came up, so they had to take cover.”
.50 caliber?” Beck asked in shock.

“.50 caliber,” Gohmert confirmed. “None of the Border Patrol have anything to stop a .50 caliber round up here. And he said, ‘We took cover and as soon as they finished firing, these people came walking up.’”

“That’s the first time they’ve fired shots to the American side, to give cover for these people to come across,” Gohmert continued. “He said they’ve not had that happen all the time they’ve been here, and this has been going on.”
“That’s getting serious, Glenn,” the congressman concluded.

Beck and Gohmert were at the border Saturday as part of Mercury One’s border relief effort. Volunteers from across the nation distributed food, water, clothing and supplies to illegal alien children in McAllen, Texas.
Both Beck and Gohmert are staunchly opposed to illegal immigration, and say the United States government must do everything in its power to secure the border. But they also believe Americans have a responsibility to care for the children while they are on our side of the border.
