Immigration agents detain 28
By Venita Jenkins
Staff writer
LUMBERTON — Federal agents detained 28 people — mostly from Mexico — during raids in four counties early Wednesday.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents targeted people suspected of crimes tied to identity theft, said Richard Rocha, a spokesman for the federal agency.
Rocha could not provide additional information. He said specifics about the investigation would be released later.

08-23-2007, 10:31 AM #2Word of the arrests spread quickly. Smithfield reported that about 100 more people than normal did not report for second shift Wednesday. At Mountaire Farms of North Carolina, a chicken processing plant in Lumber Bridge, human resources began receiving calls from employees reporting they were not coming in for second shift. The company did not have a figure for absenteeism.
28 apprehended illegals is defintely nothing to get excited about, especially when you consider the fact that many others were ignored in the process of getting the 28. For example, the man left with the kids - he was obviously illegal or he wouldn't have feared the whole family was going to be arrested."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**

Immigrants arrested in Smithfield raids remain jailed
By John Fuquay
Staff writer
RALEIGH — Nearly all of the 25 illegal immigrants with ties to Smithfield Packing Co. who were arrested last month on suspicion of identity theft remain in federal custody awaiting indictments.
Attracta Kelly, an immigration lawyer with the independent N.C. Justice Center, said the suspects would normally be free while their cases are pending. Most face a maximum two-year prison sentence.
Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested the suspects Aug. 22 during raids in Cumberland, Bladen, Hoke and Robeson counties. They were current or former employees of Smithfield, the Bladen County pork producer.
