MA: Man stabs roommate, chokes police dog, cops say

Man stabs roommate, chokes police dog, cops say

By Andrew Lightman, Gatehouse news service

ROCKLAND— An illegal alien from Brazil who allegedly stabbed his roommate, then choked a police dog while fleeing in the woods, was ordered held without bail on Wednesday.

Julian Teixeira Demoura, 42, of 808 Market St., was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, defacing property, two counts of mistreating a police dog, cruelty to an animal, resisting arrest, giving a false name to a police officer and domestic assault and battery.

He pleaded innocent to the charges in Hingham District Court and will be held without bail until a dangerousness hearing on Monday.

A Brazilian citizen living illegally in the United States, Demoura was also ordered to be held because of an outstanding deportation warrant issued by the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Rockland Police Chief John Llewellyn.

Police said Demoura stabbed his roommate five times, including once in the stomach and three times in the back with a large kitchen knife, before fleeing his house when police arrived.

The roommate, Sergio Lana, 34, was listed in stable condition at Brockton Hospital on Wednesday. He told police Demoura had been drinking when he became enraged and threw a television through a glass coffee table and stabbed at and kicked in a bedroom door.

Police were alerted about 2:20 a.m. by a third roommate, and officer Steven Somers arrived on scene and spotted Demoura in the kitchen, holding the kitchen knife.

When the two made eye contact, Somers drew his gun and Demoura ran off toward the woods, police said. Somers then went to his cruiser to get his German shepherd police dog, Boyar.

Llewellyn said Somers chased Demoura into the woods, warning him to come out.

Somers then fell through a patch of ice into several feet of water, lost hold of his flashlight and released Boyar, ordering the dog to bite Demoura, police said.

Somers said he heard one yell, then the woods went silent. Fearing that Boyar had been stabbed, Somers called for the dog to return to him, then used his cell phone to call a K-9 officer from Weymouth to help with the search.

When Boyar returned to Somers 20 minutes later, he collapsed at the police officer's feet, covered in blood with a shirt tied around his neck, Llewellyn said.

A medical examination later revealed that Demoura choked Boyar with his shirt, using a metal rod to tighten it around the dog's neck until Boyar passed out.

Demoura then looped back through the woods and waited at the edge of the woods for police officers to leave his backyard, Llewellyn said.

Demoura managed to slip into his basement, but Zar, a police dog from Duxbury, caught his scent, found the man and bit him, Llewellyn said.

Police said Demoura hit Zar on the head with a lawnmower handle, but officers from Rockland and several neighboring towns were able to put him in handcuffs.

He was then taken to South Shore Hospital to be treated for the dog bites and for minor hypothermia, Llewellyn said.

Somers declined treatment for minor hypothermia, changed his clothes at the station and returned to help with the search, Llewellyn said.

Boyar was treated for his injuries and will get a few days off to recuperate before he returns to work.

“He had been kicked and punched a number of times and obviously strangled until he passed out,â€

    Mistake #1

He'd had a chance had he not messed with the dog. People in America will forgive you for killing just about anyone or anything, except a dog.

Jeeeeezzzz! What is it about these people that they have to throw such temper tantrums? This is happening over and over. Small, insignificant things happen and make them mad, but they don't just say something about it and go on. No, they have to kill the tv, kill their roommate, kill their girlfriend, kick the girlfriend's 14-month old to death.

Watchdog had one on his site the other day where the man got mad because a group of men were discussing homo sapiens and he thought they were calling him a homosexual so he strangled one of them.
