A man accused of bribing a Customs and Border Protection officer to help him smuggle undocumented immigrants into the U.S. has been ordered to remain in jail without bond until his trial.

Senior U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Mesa ordered Jaime Sergio Quintana, 40, to remain in the El Paso County Jail last week. Quintana and the customs officer, Ricardo Manuel Cordero, 48, face bribery, conspiracy and smuggling charges. Mesa also ordered Cordero to remain jailed without bond.

Federal prosecutors allege the two men smuggled undocumented immigrants into the U.S. at least twice - once in October and once earlier this month. Prosecutors said customs agents used a confidential informant to conduct their investigation.
