Frederick Joseph Cusick

Authorities arrested a Peoria resident accused of threatening to kill Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He was charged July 8.

Maricopa County Sheriffs Office spokesman Chris Hegstrom said Thursday that detectives arrested 27-year-old Frederick Joseph Cusick at his home in Peoria.

Hegstrom said MCSO investigators and FBI officials were contacted by a concerned citizen, who saw a YouTube comment from Cusick, claiming he would target Arpaio to qualify for a $2 million bounty from a Mexican drug cartel.

Cusick also allegedly wrote on YouTube that Arpaio was a racist and that Cusick and his “boys” had “powerful weapons” to make sure Arpaio “wouldn’t be around much longer.”

An MCSO detective also found that Cusick made several other threats about Arpaio.

Detectives searched Cusick’s home and did not find any firearms.

Cusick said he had owned a gun, but sold it after a previous arrest, Hegstrom said.

He is being held in the Lower Buckeye Jail on a $3,600 bond.

MCSO said this is the third suspect charged this year for making threats against Arpaio.

Another threat this year was a mail bomb addressed to Arpaio that was intercepted by postal workers in Flagstaff, Hegstrom said.

A federal investigation is ongoing.
