A Houston man was charged in federal court today with transporting the group of illegal immigrants that was arrested the day before in Haysville.
Jaime Hernandez-Rojas, 39, who is a Mexican citizen and lawful permanent U.S. resident, faces a prison term of up to five years and a fine of as much as $250,000. His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Sedgwick County sheriff's deputies had responded to the 7200 block of South Broadway in Haysville after a citizen complaint about illegal immigrants. When deputies approached a van at a convenience store there, several passengers fled on foot. Deputies apprehended 16 passengers and the driver.
One of the immigrants, a native of Guatemala, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of disorderly conduct.
The remaining 15 immigrants were taken into custody by immigration officials and are still being processed, authorities said.
Eleven of those immigrants are from El Salvador, three are from Guatemala and one is from Mexico, said Tim Counts, spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.
"All or most of them will eventually be deported," Counts said.
