South St. Paul man charged with trying to stab girlfriend over 'worms'

Carlos Everado Santiago Sanchez, 33, accused his girlfriend of poisoning him by tampering with his food. He later told police that he had been using meth heavily.

According to the complaint:

The girlfriend called police on Feb. 16. She said Santiago Sanchez followed her into her daughter's bedroom, forced her to the ground and began to choke her. She said he punched her in the ribs and attempted to stab her in the chest or neck, but she blocked it. She said he was threatening to kill her.

Santiago Sanchez told police he believed that he had worms and that they would come out of his sores. He said he brought his girlfriend into the bathroom to show her the worms and when she said she didn't see anything, he hit her.

Santiago Sanchez was being held at the Dakota County jail. Bail was set at $50,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for March 9. If convicted, he could serve up to five years in prison and/or pay a fine of up to $10,000.

He is also an undocumented immigrant, authorities said.
