Man Killed in Shooting Near Jordanelle Reservoir
September 26th, 2005 @ 5:00pm
Amanda Butterfield Reporting

A man was driving down the road with his family when someone gunned him down. It may sound like a road-rage incident on an urban freeway, but it happened in rural Summit County, and investigators trying to piece it all together say it's no ordinary road rage.

It happened late last night on a stretch of U-S 40 near the Jordanelle Reservoir. Aniceto Armendariz was a leader in both the Hispanic Community and his Catholic Church in Park City. He was a Deacon at St. Mary's Parish, and the Utah Highway Patrol says he and his wife were driving home from a church gathering on Highway 40 near Heber when another car pulled up to them.

Shots were fired, at least two, killing Aniceto Armendariz while his wife was in the passenger seat next to him. His son can hardly believe it.

Son: "I just want everyone to know how good of a guy he was and how he was such a good person to everyone."

Utah Highway Patrol has two suspects in custody, both illegal immigrants.

Lt. Doug McCleeve, UHP: "We feel very strongly, based on the information that we have, that based on the search and the circumstances from last night, that they are the two individuals that we were looking for."

Now they're investigating if the two knew Armendariz and may have been at the same church gathering he was driving home from.

Lt Doug McCleeve, Utah Highway Patrol: "We're not sure if the parties are connected, if the suspects and victim are connected or not. That's part of our investigation. We don’t' know whether or not they have ties to each other. One of the issues is, we're working with the victim's wife to see if she can give us more information as to whether they were connected or not."

But there is a chance this shooting may have been road rage.

Joby Sweat, Friend: "Their family is such an upstanding family and asset to our community and Park City's community."

The names of the two suspects won't be released until the investigation is complete; charges are expected in the next few days. There will be a service for Armendariz tonight at 6:30 at St. Mary's Parish; everyone is welcome.
