McALLEN — A man suspected of kidnapping his girlfriend is in the county lockup.

Police arrested Israel Alberto Galvez, 27, on Wednesday night, and a McAllen municipal judge arraigned him Thursday on a charge of kidnapping, according to authorities. Bond was set at $25,000.

Galvez is being held at the Hidalgo County Jail. Federal officials placed an immigration detainer on him, meaning we will likely face deportation. When an illegal immigrant inmate is identified, a detainer — a writ authorizing the keeper of a prison to continue to hold a person in custody — is placed on the individual that tells officers to turn the inmate over to federal authorities at the end of his jail term.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the kidnapping case, Galvez forced his girlfriend into her vehicle late Wednesday night as she came out of work at the intersection of North 10th Street and Nolana. He had been waiting for her inside a green SUV with another man.

Public records indicate Galvez slapped her several times and pulled her hair, threatening to kill her. The woman had previously stopped returning his calls after learning that he might be cheating on her with another woman.

Kidnapping is a third-degree felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 upon conviction.
