The county charges the federal government $83 per day for each illegal immigrant held at the Frederick County Detention Center, making a $13 profit on each inmate. It costs Frederick County $70 a day to house an inmate.
Since July, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been paying the county to house illegal immigrants at the detention center. The illegal immigrants are charged with committing a variety of crimes in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and Virginia.
