Family That Ran Restaurant Indicted In Illegal Immigrant Case
WHEATON, Md. -- A federal grand jury has indicted four family members who ran a restaurant in Wheaton on charges relating to exploiting illegal immigrants.
The 10-count indictment stems from a raid earlier this month at El Pollo Rico.
Francisco Solano, Ines Solano, Consuelo Solano and Juan Solano all face a number of charges, including conspiracy to commit alien harboring, employing unauthorized aliens and money laundering, officials said.
The Solanos are accused of paying illegal immigrants in cash, withholding no taxes, giving them no benefits and laundering profits amounting to millions. Authorities said they suspect that an ATM at the restaurant was used to launder money.
The indictment seeks a forfeiture of close to $8 million in cash, as well as property and vehicles. It accuses the Solanos of making cash deposits in amounts less than $10,000 to avoid triggering the banks to report the money to the federal government.
Authorities seized the restaurant and shut it down, but after two weeks, the Solanos are trying to reopen the business to help pay for their defense, News4's Chris Gordon reported.
