MD - House Republicans Pull Support For Immigration Legislat
Friday, March 27, 2009
WBAL Radio as reported by John Patti and Associated Press
Several prominent Republicans in the Maryland House of Delegates say they will strip their name from a compromise bill on licenses for illegal immigrants because it creates a "two-tier" system.
A bipartisan group of House Judiciary Committee members voted Thursday to approve amendments to a bill that would prohibit illegal immigrants from getting Maryland driver's licenses starting April 19. The compromise, however, would allow illegal immigrants who already have Maryland IDs to renew their licenses and receive a distinct form of identification.
Some Republican committee members approved the legislation, but say they didn't have time to understand the 24 pages of amendments. Maryland is one of four states that issue licenses to illegal immigrants.
