Israel Builds Sinai Border Fence; Illegal Crossings Drop 99.9%
by JOEL B. POLLAK4 Jun 2013
This week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has touted the success of a new border fence that Israel built along its boundary with Egypt to stop illegal infiltrators. In a statement posted at his government website, Netanyahu reported that illegal crossings had declined 99.9%, from 2,000 per month to only two.
“The fence that we built in the south is achieving the result for which it was erected,” Netanyahu said. “As opposed to the over 2,000 infiltrators who entered Israel exactly one year ago and dispersed to various cities, in May 2013 exactly two infiltrators crossed the border and were detained. Now we need to focus on repatriating the illegal infiltrators who are here, and we will meet this task as well.”
The main, 144-mile section of the fence was completed in early 2013, according to a January report by the Wall Street Journal. It is sixteen feet high and includes “barbed wire, surveillance cameras and radar.” By comparison, the U.S.-Mexico border is roughly 2,000 miles long, and only about a third is fenced off. The Israeli fence’s construction was accelerated due to security concerns in the years since Egyptian autocrat Hosni Mubarak left power, leaving a vacuum eventually filled by a Muslim Brotherhood government.
The new Israeli fence is separate from the fence that runs along, and partially inside, the West Bank, which has successfully stopped infiltrations by suicide bombers. It also placed a small amount of disputed territory on the western, “Israeli” side of the fence while creating some hardship for local land owners and workers.

What Trump Can Learn From The Man Who Built Israel's Border Walls

When it comes to planning a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico, the Trump Administration could learn a few things from Dany Tirza, the man who orchestrated Israel’s barriers on the West Bank and Sinai Peninsula.
President Trump, in an executive order last week ordered the "immediate construction" of a border wall with Mexico. As the nation debates the plan and GOP leaders on Capital Hill look for $10 billion to pay for it, it's clear that Trump's mind is as made up on the issue as it was more than a year ago. “If you think walls don’t work, all you have to do is ask Israel,” said Trump in a 2015 debate. “The wall works, when properly done.”
I decided to do what he suggested, and ask Israel, which led to Dany Tirza, the architect of Israel's barriers on the West Bank and Sinai Peninsula. "It has saved so many lives," Tirza said by phone from Israel. "We had so many terror attacks before that nobody wanted to invest in Israel." That changed. Since his first barrier went up Israel's GDP has surged from $121 billion to $300 billion.
As a colonel in the Israel Defense Forces, Tirza was in charge of strategic planning from 1994 to 2007. During the 2000 Camp David peace talks between Israel and the PLO, Chairman Yasser Arafat took to referring to Tirza as "Abu Kharita," Arabic for "Father of the maps."
Soon after those talks ended without a peace deal, the Palestinians began a series of attacks that came to be known as the Second Intifada. The violence escalated into March 2002, when 139 Israelis died in attacks.
Tirza says there’s one more vital element to building a wall:cross-border cooperation. “It has to be part of a whole system,” he says, including authorities on both sides working to achieve shared goals, like halting drug smuggling and human trafficking. “At the core of the solution has to be coordination and cooperation of federal agencies,” he says. “There’s lots of intelligence that’s not being shared.”
“In Israel before we talked about building a fence, we took all these entities to one control room to manage them all together. You have to have shared intelligence. If not, then you’re building something that will not help the problem.”
Israel’s West Bank barrier fence cost about $1.6 million per mile to build. Its barrier across the Sinai was more like $3 million per mile. Tirza says maintenance costs are on the order of 8% of construction costs per year. Trump has estimated that a big, beautiful wall with Mexico would cost about $10 billion. That's about $5 million a mile if applied to the entire 2,000 mile border, or about $8 million per mile if Trump only addresses the 1,300 miles that doesn’t already have barriers on it.
Can it be done? Of course. The Great Wall of China is 5,500 miles.

Heard about this guy on the radio today. Said no one actually saw how he got up there and doubt very much he could have climbed up there himself. Not a smart move imo. What does he hope to accomplish? Stupid if he is trying to show how easy it is to climb a fence. Trump has not said he's building border fences, he wants a wall, big difference. And not a good idea to insult our president by behaving this way. Stupid action especially for a politician.

I think everyone knows a wall or a fence isn't going to stop illegal immigration but we can still try to make it harder with a taller wall or stronger fences like we did in San Diego with the double layered fence for instance. Have to go after the job magnet mostly. Employers should face penalties of some kind and make it mandatory to use e-verify.

Honestly, the only thing that's going to stop it is to deport everyone who is here now and then do everything possible to keep them out. We have to get them out first, cut all benefits so they know coming back will gain them no jobs, no benefits, no protection, no housing, no cell phones, no money, no food stamps, no charity, no nothing. But to do that we have to deport them. All of them including minor children.
There can be no "softening", no exemptions, no mercy, there are no "good ones". They're all here taking up space, jobs, housing, wages, businesses that compete or were taken from Americans. We'll get our strawberries out of the fields, we'll get the cows milked, we've always taken care of business and farms and animals. We'll build our wall, our houses, our buildings. We'll clean our hotel rooms and businesses. We'll flip the burgers and make the salads. Americans are standing in lines a mile long for these jobs.
GET THEM ALL OUT! KEEP THEM OUT. By all means necessary, whatever it takes.A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan
