Mexican leader blasts Arizona immigration law

Mexican President Felipe Calderon told a joint session of Congress Thursday morning that he will work to make his country a place that people do not have to leave to find opportunity.

But he also clearly expressed his opposition to Arizona’s tough immigration law and called of American lawmakers to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

“I strongly disagree with the recently adopted law in Arizona. It’s a law that not only ignores the reality that cannot be erased by decree,’’ he said, but it “introduced a terrible idea of racial profiling as the basis for law enforcement.’’

That comment drew a standing ovation from Democrats in the full chamber. But most Republicans remained seated.

“What we need today is to fix a broken and inefficient system,’’ Calderon said. “So the time has come for the United States and Mexico to work together on this issue. The time has come to reduce migration and turn this phenomenon into a legal and orderly flow of work.â€

Orange County’s sole Democratic member, Rep. Loretta Sanchez, was one of the lawmakers on the committee that escorted Calderon into the House chamber for his joint address. Sanchez, whose parents came to the U.S. from Mexico, has criticized the Arizona law.
