Mexican man gets 15 months for attempting to smuggle baby

A man who attempted to smuggle a 1-year-old boy into the country by claiming they were brothers was sentenced to 15 months in prison, an official said Monday.
Jose Alfredo Ramos-Pineda, 21, told authorities that he was to be paid $150 to take the boy to a store in downtown Nogales, Ariz., where a woman in a red vehicle would take the boy from him, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.
He attempted to smuggled the toddler in on April 12 at the Nogales port of entry using another child’s laser visa that was given to him to facilitate the crossing, the release said. He eventually admitted that he did not know the boy.
Ramos-Pineda was convicted of conspiracy to transport an illegal immigrant for profit.
The child was turned over to the Mexican Consulate, which gave the child to the Mexican Department of Family Services to be reunited with his family, the release said.

Poor kid, having to go through that, but I wonder if the smuggling was not trying to get him a fake American birth certificate, so mommy and daddy would eventually be able to sneak in to take care of him. Then, with a false identity as US born, at least one of them would be able to stay for humanitarian reasons.
