Mexican Navy arrests 8 Gulf Cartel gunmen

The Mexican Navy announced the capture of eight Gulf Cartel gunmen in Matamoros after a lengthy shootout on Saturday afternoon.

The shootout took place in the La Encantada neighborhood and left four gunmen wounded, a news release from the Mexican Navy stated. Information on deaths or shootouts reported in other areas of the city was not readily available.

According to the release, a convoy of Mexican Marines was patrolling the streets of Matamoros when it came under fire by uniformed Gulf Cartel members and fought back. Four of the arrested gunmen were identified as Gustavo Garcia Hernandez, Francisco Lara Gonzalez, Leonardo Daniel Medina Mata and Ernesto Marin Rodriguez Ramirez. They were turned over to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, or PGR, for prosecution, the release stated.

The other four gunmen were transported under heavy guard to a Matamoros hospital, where they were treated for their wounds before being turned over to the PGR, the release stated. They were identified as Abraham Garcia Bautista, Gerardo Torres Garza, Omar Mireles Martinez, and Luis A. Moreno Perez.

In addition to the arrests, the Mexican Navy reported seizing two SUVs, three AK-47 assault rifles, five .223 assault rifles, one .38 Super cal. pistol and 560 ammunition rounds. Other items seized included hats and other items with the CDG logo, which stands for Cartel Del Golfo or Gulf Cartel.
