MEXICO CITY — Police say they have detained an Ecuadorean man for carrying about $2.5 million in cash in a suitcase at Mexico City's international airport.

The Public Safety Department said Friday the money was found during a routine inspection of luggage being taken aboard a flight bound for Colombia.

The man who registered the suitcase was taken into custody. No charges were immediately filed.

Police say inspectors became suspicious on Thursday when they saw lots of rectangular shapes in the man's suitcase.
The shapes turned out to be 153 stacks of U.S. currency wrapped in plastic.
