Drug cartels tweak strategy, analyst says

A company that gathers intelligence on Mexican drug cartels is forecasting that in the short term, more of the violence will be concentrated in the Monterrey area, perhaps minimizing the fighting in Matamoros and Reynosa.

Currently there is more activity in the state of Nuevo Leon because the Gulf Cartel and the Nueva Federacion are attacking assets of their rival organization, the Zetas, said a spokesman with Grupo Savant, a Washington-based firm.

Since last February, the Gulf Cartel and Zetas have been openly fighting each other. The Grupo Savant spokesman, who asked that his name not be used, said in the past month or so, the strategy has changed somewhat with the appearance of the Nueva Federacion, which he called another manifestation of the Gulf Cartel.

Recently, violence has escalated with the Nueva Federacion-Gulf Cartel attacking not Zeta members but their “assetsâ€
