Mexico issues travel alert for Mexican citizens in Arizona
10:15 AM
By Ross D. Franklin, AP
The Mexican government issued a travel alert today cautioning its citizens about travel in Arizona because of a tough new immigration law and an "adverse political atmosphere" for all Mexican visitors.
The alert by Mexico's Foreign Relations Department to migrant communities and all Mexican visitors urges those in Arizona to "act with prudence and respect the framework of local laws," the Associated Press reports.

The warning says that once the law takes effect, foreigners can be detained if they fail to carry immigration documents.
While enforcement details are not yet clear, the alert says ,"it should be assumed that any Mexican citizen could be bothered and questioned for no other reason at any moment."
Mexican foreign secretary Patricia Espinosa, speaking to the Institute for Mexicans Abroad on Monday, said Mexican citizens in the United States are experiencing particularly difficult times because of the economy and "a resurgence of hostile attitudes, the product of prejudice and intolerance," according to the Foreign Affairs Web site.
"The recent signing of Law SB 1070 in the state of Arizona is an example of this," she said.
Espinosa also said that Mexicans in the United States will have the federal government's full support, "especially those Mexican citizens whose rights are violated."
Update at 11:37 a.m. ET: Mexican President Felipe Calderon has warned that relations with the U.S. border state will suffer as a results of the law.
The measure, he said on Monday, "opens the door to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement," the Associated Press reports.
Calderon also said he had instructed the Foreign Relations Department to double its efforts to protect the rights of Mexicans living in the United States and seek help from lawyers and immigration experts.
"Nobody can sit around with their arms crossed in the face of decisions that so clearly affect our countrymen," Calderon said in a speech at the Institute for Mexicans Abroad.
Update at 12:33 p.m. ET: Calls for boycotting Arizona and its businesses over the new immigration bill are spreading virally and now the state's business community has begun fighting back on similar social networking sites, The Arizona Republic reports.
La Opinion, the nation's largest Spanish-language newspaper, has called for a boycott, and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is voting today on a resolution calling for an end to any business the city has with Arizona.
A fall convention for immigration attorneys has already been canceled, the newsaper reports.
Online, more than 10 Facebook pages are dedicated to boycotting Arizona, with two attracting thousands of supporters: Boycott Arizona and Boycott Arizona 2010.
A Facebook poster from Chicago urges fans to boycott games of major league team who do their spring training in Arizona.
To fight back, the Arizona Hotel and Lodging Association has its own Facebook page, "Don't Boycott AZ Tourism" with this tagline: "Don't punish 200,000 tourism employees for politics."
Kristen Jarnagin, spokeswoman for the association, says the page is not about the immigration law, rather an attempt "to let people know the difference in who you're really harming if you boycott Arizona."
Arizona's decision decades ago not to adopt a Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday cost it a Super Bowl and the Diamondbacks worry that the immigration law could cost them next year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game, The Republic reports.

Mexico sounds like that kid who has had all the toys, and expects everyone to play it their way because they have the toys, and when the other kids won't they stomp their feet and yell "fine, but you can't play with any of my toys now", as the other kids continue to walk away.
They are having a hissy fit because we are actually beginning to enforce our laws and do something about their illegal, law breaking citizens.
Mexico, we're not playing nice anymore, yours and anyone else's citizens in this nation, here illegally, will eventually have to go home, or be sent home forcefully."In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned. Forgot...not to mention less crime which has always made our lives "exciting" (we have loads of fun watching our local police come in and out of this complex several times a week with their "Gang Enforcement" vests on...).
Less sexual pedators, less drug and gang crimes, less ID theft, less drunk driving deaths.....
I don't know, maybe we need to beg Mexico to not have their citizens boycott the U.S......we're really losing a lot here (and since tourism from Mexico counts for so much)."In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned. Mexico Issues Travel Alert Over New Arizona Law
MARTHA MENDOZA, Associated Press Writer
MEXICO CITY (AP) ―
The Mexican government warned its citizens Tuesday to use extreme caution if visiting Arizona because of a tough new law that requires all immigrants and visitors to carry U.S.-issued documents or risk arrest.
And a government-affiliated agency that supports Mexicans living and working in the United States called for boycotts of Tempe, Ariz.-based US Airways, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Suns until those organizations rebuke the law.
"We are making a strong call to the Arizona government to retract this regressive and racist law that's impacting not only residents of Arizona, but people in all 50 states and in Mexico as well," said Raul Murillo, who works with the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, an autonomous agency of Mexico's Foreign Ministry.
US Airways spokesman Jim Olson said "we have had absolutely no customers who have canceled fights" as a result of the controversy. Calls to the Diamondbacks and the Suns were not immediately returned.
The boycott demand came hours after the Foreign Ministry issued its travel alert for Arizona, warning "that any Mexican citizen could be bothered and questioned for no other reason at any moment."
The law's passage shows "an adverse political atmosphere for migrant communities and for all Mexican visitors," the alert said.
Arizona's law — slated to take effect in late July or early August — makes it a state crime to be in the U.S. illegally. Lawmakers said the legislation, which has sparked huge protests and litigation, was needed because the Obama administration is failing to enforce existing federal laws.
Mexico's alert says that once the law takes effect, foreigners can be detained if they fail to carry immigration documents. And it warns that the law will make it illegal to hire or be hired from a vehicle stopped on the street.
Each day, more than 65,000 Mexican residents are in Arizona to work, visit friends and relatives and shop, according to a University of Arizona study sponsored by the Arizona Office of Tourism. While there, the Mexican visitors spend more than $7.35 million daily in Arizona's stores, restaurants, hotels and other businesses, the researchers found.
Bimbo Bakeries, one of many Mexican companies operating in Arizona, said Tuesday it doesn't expect Arizona's new immigration law to affect its employees.
"We carefully screen all associates to ensure they are authorized to work in the United States," Bimbo spokesman David Margulies said.
At the Mexico City airport Tuesday, Mexicans heading for the U.S. said they were very troubled by the new law.
"It's humiliating," said Modesto Perez, who lives in Illinois. "It's really ugly."
