MEXICO CITY—An alleged founding member of Mexico's feared Zetas—a gang of hit men linked to the Gulf drug cartel—will stand trial on organized crime, drug and weapons charges, prosecutors announced Friday.

Jaime Gonzalez Duran, also known as "The Hummer," will also face charges of transactions with illicit funds.

Gonzalez Duran is an army deserter who was arrested in November in the northern city of Reynosa. He is allegedly one of the founding members of the Zetas, a band of cartel hit men believed responsible for massacres and beheadings.

The Attorney General's Office said three other men arrested with Gonzalez Duran will face the same charges.

Prosecutors call Gonzalez Duran one of the most dangerous criminals in a country where gangland slayings have cost the lives of more than 5,300 people this year.

Mexico has also been rocked by drug corruption scandals in which more than a dozen high-ranking police and prosecution officials have been arrested or placed under investigation for passing information to cartels.

On Friday, the Attorney General's Office announced the cleanup campaign has also netted a military officer, one of the first non-civilians named in the corruption case.

Officer Arturo Gonzalez Rodriguez was ordered placed under house arrest for 40 days while he is investigated for purportedly leaking information to an organized crime group.

The Attorney General's press office said it did not have any information of Gonzalez Rodriguez's rank or branch of service.
