Mexico Plans to Expand Migrant Education in US & Canada

    Frontera NorteSur

Building on a cross-border educational initiative, Mexico's federal government plans to expand educational and vocational training programs for Mexican migrants in the United States. Speaking at an educational and economic development conference in Mexico last week, Mexican Education Minister Josefina Vazquez Mota said the administration of President Felipe Calderon plans to open an additional 100 community education centers to serve the migrant population in the United States. The functionary also announced that Mexico will open a similar educational facility in Canada for the first time.

The purpose of the centers is two-fold. Besides providing basic and secondary education skills, the programs aim to professionalize the work skills of migrants. Certification programs will be made available for Las Vegas gardeners, New York restaurant industry employees, California cosmetologists and Wisconsin dairy workers, Vazquez said, adding that better education and economic competitiveness are linked together by the ties between the three member states of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

"(Workers) will have certainty and labor mobility," Vazquez contended. "Their labor competencies will be recognized." For businessmen, the programs will provide "much more competitive, committed and cohesive personnel," she added. In the academic realm, the new community education centers will initially focus on teaching English to migrants.

According to Vazquez, the international program will be managed by Mexico's National College of Professional and Technical Education (Conalep), which will celebrate its 30th anniversary later this year. The educational institution is in the process of expanding its curricula to encompass robotics, informatics, alternative energy, tourism and health, among other subjects.

They are realizing that AMericans are just sick and tired of spending tax dollars to educate and train uneducated and illiterate illegal alien Mexicans. This initiative is ridiculous and just begs the question.....why aren't they educating these people in MEXICO? Shouldn't the people of Mexico be upset that Mexico is doing this here and not in MEXICO?

MEXICO SHOULD BE BUILDING THESE CENTERS IN MEXICO AND INSTRUCTING THEIR CITIZENS ON MEXICAN SOIL.

ILLEGAL ALIENS CANNOT LEGALLY WORK IN THE U.S.

Mexico already has 47 consulates and a fleet of mobile consulates--let them give English classes.

Another means of setting up smuggling or other types of networks?

These are aimed at illegal immigrants--any city or state allowing the Mexican government to open such centers is aiding and abetting illegal aliens, encouraging idenity theft and false documents and should be raided by ICE.

How can Mexico set up so-called 'education centers' on U.S. soil that are not regulated by American standards?

No states should license or recognize any 'certification' from a foreign government.

Is this a plan to aid in the official recognizion the matricula ID farce?

How is Mexico paying for this?

Another attempt of Mexican government corruption infiltrating the U.S.?

Mexico needs to be expending its time, money, energy, personnel and resources helping Mexican citizens in Mexico by cleaning up Mexico and the drug cartels.

It's another way to colonize the United States. instead of building schools and educating their underclass in Mexico...they are going to do it here so they can continue to send their illegally obtained remittances from illegal employment while they illegally reside in our country. Why does our government allow this? No public agency should be entering into any kind of agreement with Mexico on this...NONE. Taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill to educate illiterate adults who are illegally residing in our country.

Does status in the U.S. have any bearing on who can receive this training? Will they use their resources to train people who legally can not obtain a job in this country? Has Calderon forgotten that if you sneak across the border you are considered an illegal alien and therefore ineligible to work? Or, is he getting an early start in anticipation of comprehensive immigration reform and the North American Union?

Since Mexico has money for education here in the U.S. they need to be paying tuition for the ones in our public school systems and reimbersing the tax-payers those fees.
