MEXICO IN A RUTHLESS WAR

Mexican President Felipe Calderon says that his government "does not and will never negotiate" with drug traffickers, and vowed to press on with a military clampdown.

Drug-related deaths have doubled this year, to more than 5,300 according to Mexico's top prosecutor, despite the deployment of 36,000 troops across the country.

The Mexican president, who launched the military crackdown when he took power two years ago, blamed his predecessors for the country's current woes.

The vast power and ruthlessness of the traffickers is turning Mexico into a lawless state and Mexico's gangs are now so powerful, violent and rich that US drug enforcement agencies say they have operations stretching from the supply end in Colombia and Peru to trafficking routes through Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador, the Caribbean and Mexico to dealers deep in the US.

Since January, police say, 960 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Sinaloa state alone, the hub of drug trafficking of Mexico, and Drug cartels, including the powerful Juarez and Sinaloa gangs, are fighting for control of key trafficking routes into the United States across Mexico, particularly in border areas.

Police in California say the spiraling drug war in Mexico poses more of a threat to them than terrorism.In the past year there have been almost 5,400 drug-related murders in Mexico - more than double the previous year
