TIJUANA, Mexico – Officials say more than 200 bullets have been fired in the streets of Tijuana and at least one ex-policeman has died in the Mexican border city.

Baja California state Attorney General Rommel Moreno says an initial shootout involved six cars on busy streets Saturday afternoon. A second outburst of gunfire came hours later.

One former city police officer died. Officials said late Sunday they found 245 bullet casings and have arrested five people. They are questioning four others.
Violence has claimed 61 lives in Tijuana in just nine days, most related to drug gangs.

As another indicator of border-region crime, officials in Nuevo Leon state say they have broken up 61 gangs of kidnappers and extortionists so far this year.
