A joint law enforcement effort to prevent gang activity has resulted in the arrest of 36 gang members in southwest Detroit since October, officials announced today.

Detroit police and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, working together under Operation Community Shield, arrested gang members with criminal histories of assault, probation and parole violations, larceny, malicious destruction of property, breaking and entering, and narcotic offenses.

Arrested were members of various street gangs, including the Latin Counts, Folks, Sureños and Jamaican Posse.

Police were able to identify one of the arrested individuals as the leader of the Sureños gang hierarchy.

Since the start of Operation Community Shield in 2006, police have made 13,000 gang arrests throughout the country, said Khaalid Walls, spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
