OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A new study on the financial impact of immigrants says foreign-born people paid about $154 million in 2006 in Nebraska property, income, sales and gasoline taxes.

The report from the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Latino and Latin American Studies says Nebraska immigrants' contributions to the economy are significant.

Immigrants, meanwhile, cost the state government nearly $145 million in food stamps, public assistance, health and educational expenditures in 2006.

In 2006, Nebraska had nearly 100,000 foreign-born residents. That's more than 5% of the total state population.
