In a statement to Breitbart News, ICE officials said Arrona-Lara was originally brought to their attention after he was charged with homicide in Mexico. It remains unclear how long the illegal alien had been living in the U.S., and thus evading arrest in Mexico.

An official from the Mexican state of Guanajuato confirmed Monday that a man arrested while driving his pregnant wife to a hospital for a C-section in San Bernardino is wanted for homicide.

Surveillance video caught agents arresting Joel Arrona Lara at a gas station on Wednesday. Lara's wife, Maria del Carmen Venegas, is seen in tears as her husband is taken away.

After his arrest, she had to drive herself to the hospital. She gave birth to a baby boy.

A man driving his pregnant wife to the hospital for a scheduled C-section was arrested in San Bernardino by ICE agents who said he is wanted in Mexico on homicide charges.

ICE agents initially said Lara was arrested for being in the country illegally. It wasn't until hours later, amid public backlash, they said he was wanted in Mexico for murder.

Lara's family thinks officials have the wrong man, possibly even confusing him for his brother. His attorney plans to file a motion Monday to set a bail hearing.

"Mr. Arrona denies any criminal history in Mexico and he is unaware of any criminal proceedings in Mexico in which he is named as a defendant," a lawyer representing the family told Eyewitness News in a statement.

An official with the Mexican state of Guanajuato is confirming to ABC News that an arrest warrant for Lara was issued in 2006.

The couple came to the U.S. 12 years ago from the city of Leon, Guanajuato, without legal authorization to live in the U.S.

Acting ICE Director Ron Vitiello said Monday on "Your World" that ICE agents did "nothing wrong" by apprehending an illegal immigrant who was driving his pregnant wife to the hospital.

Maria del Carmen Venegas, 32, said her husband, Joel Arrona-Lara, 35, was taken away by ICE at a gas station where the couple stopped on the way to the hospital, so she was forced to drive herself there, where she gave birth to a boy.

The arrest led to heavy criticism of the agency by immigration activists and the press.

Vitiello said that the case was misconstrued, and Arrona-Lara was had an outstanding warrant issued for his arrest in Mexico on homicide charges.

"This is far from an innocent victim," Vitiello said. "This person was wanted by foreign authorities for murder. And like this arrest, most of what ICE does in cities and towns is targeted enforcement."

"None of the ICE officers that made that arrest did anything wrong. That's exactly what we ask them to do, each and every day. It just so happened that they were on their way to the hospital from that location."

Vitiello also said that many people, including in Washington, do not "realize how important" the agency is.

Neil Cavuto asked Vitiello, who was named as the agency's acting boss in late-June, how he feels about chairing an agency that some Americans believe "shouldn't be around."

Vitiello said that critics should know that 20,000 Americans work for ICE and risk their lives to protect their community.

"I think people don't realize how important and valuable ICE is," he said, noting that the agency was born out of the 9/11 aftermath so "we didn't have to learn those lessons again."

Vitiello said many foreign nationals have realized that pre-Trump illegal immigration policy consisted of granting what is effectively a summons to appear in court, should they cross the American border illegally.

He said that policy was "enticing" people to come here illegally, and that President Trump was enforcing "the laws on the books" when immigration laws became subject to political criticism.

Monday on his Fox News Channel show, Tucker Carlson called out the “propaganda” from the left in the case of illegal immigrant Joel Arrona Lara, who was arrested by ICE as he and his wife rushed to the hospital to have a baby. Arrona Lara is wanted in Mexico on homicide charges.

Carlson noted how The New York Times waited until the fifth paragraph to share information about Arrona being wanted on homicide charges in their report with the headline “ICE Detained Man Who Was Driving His Pregnant Wife to a Hospital.”

“That’s what propaganda looks like — artfully disguised lying designed to manipulate rather than inform,” Carlson said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” asking how the New York Times would craft the headline if it had been a legal United States citizen arrested for murder.

He later added, “If only you were here illegally, they’d defend you.”

When we are down to explaining, apologizing, and playing defense just to arrest the worst of the worst of the illegals, it is time to realize we are up the creek without a paddle.
