Migrants unable to pay for their journeys across the Mediterranean are being sold to organ traffickers, an Eritrean smuggler has told Italian authorities.

Nuredin Wehabrebi Atta, who was arrested by Italian police in 2014, is the first foreigner given witness protection by Italian authorities, after revealing details that have led to arrests of dozens of alleged members of an elaborate criminal network trafficking drugs, arms and migrants from Africa to Europe.

Those who were unable to pay for their voyages "were sold for €15,000 to groups, particularly Egyptians, who were involved in removing and selling organs," Mr Atta claimed. The migrants were killed immediately before their organs were harvested, he said.

His testimony led police to an alleged trafficking network which they broke up yesterday, arresting 23 and issuing arrest warrants for another 15 people in raids across Italy.

The group included 25 Eritreans, 12 Ethiopians and an Italian who police said belonged to an organisation that had smuggled thousands of migrants into Europe from Africa.

The arrests were part of a lengthy investigation conducted by Italian police connected to Mr Atta's testimony that revealed cells in North Africa, Rome, Palermo, Agrigento and other locations elsewhere in Europe.

More than €526,000 and $25,000 (€23,400) in cash was recovered in June from the alleged Rome cell, which had its headquarters in a perfume shop near the city's central station.

The former people smuggler was sentenced to five years in prison in February for his role in the operation.

He said he decided to collaborate "because there have been too many deaths in the sea" and referred in particular to the 2013 tragedy in which 360 people were killed at Lampedusa, although he said he was not involved in it.

"The deaths that we are aware of are a small part of it," Mr Atta told police in Palermo. "In Eritrea alone there have been victims in eight out of 10 families."

Also yesterday a Palermo court heard that another alleged Eritrean smuggler extradited to Italy with the assistance of Britain's National Crime Agency was the wrong man. At a preliminary court hearing, defence lawyer

Michele Calantropo presented documented testimony from two refugees now living in Sweden claiming that the arrested man is not alleged notorious people smuggler Medhanie Yehdego Mered, as authorities say.

Calantropo told the court the arrested man was Medhanie Tesfamariam Behre, who the refugees say has no connection to people smuggling, and asked for him to be released from prison immediately. The hearing has been adjourned until July 21.

Italian prosecutors, British police and British diplomats have claimed that the man on trial is Mered, allegedly a notorious 35-year-old people smuggler who, it is claimed, has sent thousands of Eritreans to Sicily.

A report released by Amnesty International on Friday revealed horrifying accounts of sexual violence, torture and religious persecution on the people-smuggling routes from Libya to southern Italy.

Meanwhile, Macedonian police say they have discovered 73 illegal migrants in a truck during a routine check early on Saturday near Macedonia's border with Serbia.

The migrants are from Syria, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Most of them are women with children, police said.

The 35-year-old truck driver, a Macedonian, has been detained.

All I see is men in all these photos. Very few women, children. Something is wrong with this. What kind of man leaves their family behind? There is more to these imported men then we are being told. How many imported men are coming to the US, how many women and children? My guess is they are mostly men.

This is what O & hillary did to Europe - spreading islam. EU is complicit in not turning them around.

Gadaffi said many times, "I will unleash africa on Europe". Sick O with his redistribution of wealth was very aware of Gadaffi statements and what he had the power to stop - that is why he is dead.

Immigrant Women in the United States

    MARCH 20, 2015

    SPOTLIGHT
By Ariel G. Ruiz, Jie Zong, and Jeanne Batalova

As of 2013, 49 percent (10.5 million) of all immigrant women were naturalized U.S. citizens. (Photo: McBeth/Flickr)

Following a history of majority male migration through the mid-20th century, women have migrated to the United States in large numbers as a result of the emphasis on family reunification ushered in by the 1965 Immigration Act. Female immigrants represent 51 percent of the overall foreign-born population, with 21.2 million immigrant women residing in the United States in 2013, out of a total immigrant population of 41.3 million. The female share of the immigrant population is higher in the United States than it is globally, where about 48 percent of the international migrant stock is female (see Figure 1). Even as female migration has increased globally since 1980, the share in the United States—the world’s top immigrant destination—has decreased slightly from 53 percent in 1980 to around 51 percent in 2013.

The gender of the immigrant population raises implications for sending and receiving countries, with respect to labor opportunities, family structure, gender roles, and more.

Using data from the United Nations Population Division, the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey (ACS), and the Department of Homeland Security’s Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, this Spotlight provides information on the population of female immigrants in the United States, focusing on marital status, fertility, and other key socioeconomic characteristics, with comparison to both native-born women and immigrant men...

Women and children refugee numbers crossing into Europe surge

    Duncan Robinson in Brussels

Women and children now account for more than half of all refugees arriving in Greece, marking a gender shift at a time when some policymakers are fretting about the social risks posed by large concentrations of male immigrants.

Last June, men accounted for 73 per cent of those who risked the dangerous sea crossing to Europe from Turkey, via Greece. But according to new figures from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, they have accounted for just 45 per cent so far this year.

At the same time, the proportion of women has nearly doubled from a low of 11 per cent last summer to 21 per cent now. Children account for the remaining 34 per cent.

The ratio of male and female migrants has come under scrutiny in the wake of the New Year’s attacks in Cologne, when hundreds of German women were assaulted by a crowd of men, many of whom were migrants, according to witnesses and police.

Some analysts have pointed to the gender imbalance among the recent arrivals — and the large concentrations of young men separated from their families — as a possible explanation for the extraordinary mass assault.

One reason for the sudden gender shift is the fact that men who made the initial trip last year are now attempting to bring their families to join them. Another is the fact that women and children tend to have a higher chance of receiving protection in EU countries, resulting in more risking the journey, according to the UNHCR.

    In depth

    Europe’s migration crisis
The EU is struggling to respond to a surge of desperate migrants that has resulted in thousands of deaths since the beginning of the year

The increased number of women making the trip could eventually bring more balance to new migrant communities in Europe.

But in the meantime, it has highlighted other social problems, including the dearth of facilities available for female refugees, who are often exposed to assault and rape on their journey to Europe.

“The health and rights of victims of wars and persecution, especially women and adolescent girls, should not be treated like an afterthought in humanitarian response,” said Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the UN population fund, UNFPA.

UNHCR criticised EU member states for failing to set up facilities specifically for woman who have been abused on the trip in a report published on Wednesday. Many shelters along the so-called western Balkans route lack gender segregated facilities.

That has done little to deter female refugees from making the dangerous passage. “They accept a psychological level of risk above what we understand,” said one official involved in the EU’s anti-smuggling operation in the Mediterranean. “Women start contraceptive treatment before leaving: in their head they think they will be raped.”

Some female refugees have married “out of desperation” for safety, according to Vincent Cochetel, the director of UNHCR’s bureau for Europe.

“Many women and girls travelling on their own are entirely exposed, deprived of their family or community to protect them,” said Mr Cochetel.

“Even those travelling with family are often vulnerable to abuse.”

Migrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq tend to be the most mixed, while those from Pakistan and Morocco are nearly all male, according to the figures.

Cannot believe the media stories - they are told to make stories more pleasing to refugee admittance. One can look at all pics, video and see that they are predominantly MEN.

some discussion of that & other topics.. 900 plucked from the sea, 25 women & 3 children - the rest were young men. MSM manipulates migrant issue.
