NOGALES — Authorities say a military service member assigned to the Southwest Border Support Mission has died in southern Arizona.
Officials at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado said in a statement that the military service member was found dead Saturday near Nogales.
They say the incident is under investigation, but foul play isn't suspected.
The name and age of the military service member who died hasn't been released.
President Donald Trump assigned several thousand troops to the southwest border in recent months to support the U.S. Border Patrol.

Officials Identify 20-Year-Old Servicemember Found Dead in Arizona

Authorities said a military servicemember assigned to the Southwest Border Support Mission was found dead Saturday in southern Arizona.
Private First Class Steven Hodges’ body was found near Nogales, and while the incident remains under investigation, foul play is not suspected, according to officials at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
“Every Soldier in the Tomahawk Battalion is an essential member of our team. The loss of any Soldier is deeply felt. Private First Class Steven Hodges is sorely missed by his teammates and the entire Tomahawk family, every Soldier is a national treasure,” Lt. Col. Sean Lyons, the 1st Bat., 23rd Inf. Reg. Commander wrote in a statement to NBC 7.
The 20-year-old servicemember was from Menifee, California.
Hodges enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2017 and served in the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, since February 2018, as a Grenadier, according to authorities.
He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon during his service.
“We are grateful for all the young men and women who volunteer to serve our nation. We are humbled at the sacrifices their families continue to make on a daily basis, Steven and his family are in our prayers,” Lyons said.

A military service member assigned to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border has been found dead in southern Arizona -- the second to die there this month, authorities say.
The service member -- who has not been identified -- was
found Sunday near Ajo, according to a statement from officials at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo. Foul play is not suspected in the death, which is under investigation, officials added.

The service member's body was found 22 days after U.S. Army Pfc. Steven Hodges was found dead on federal land near Nogales, the Tucson Sentinel reported. Hodges was also assigned to the Southwest Border Support Mission.
Officials said foul play isn’t suspected in Hodges' death either.
Hodges' battalion commander, Lt. Col. Sean Lyons, said "every soldier in the Tomahawk Battalion is an essential member of our team.

Another military service member assigned to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border has died in southern Arizona, according to authorities.
Two Army soldiers found dead this month while deployed to the Mexican border in Arizonadied of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, a medical examiner said.
The deaths of Pfc. Steven Hodges of Menifee, Calif., and 21-year-old Pfc. Kevin Christian of Haslet, Texas, occurred weeks apart. Pima County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Greg Hess announced his determination on Thursday.

Hodges was found June 1 near the border city of Nogales; Christian died Sunday, 200 miles away in Ajo.
Both men were assigned to the Southwest Border Support Mission, which has some 2,400 service members.
President Trump has deployed active-duty soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border to support the Border Patrol amid a surge of migrants from Central America. Duties have included placing hundreds of miles of concertina wire and reinforcing points of entry.
Military officials said the deaths are still under investigation.
