MN: Fatal fight leads to more charges

Fatal fight leads to more charges

By Sarah Day — Sentinel Staff Writer

WINNEBAGO — Days after Marcos Gonzalez was sentenced for first-degree manslaughter related to a July fight in Winnebago, the victim’s brother was charged for his role.

Eduardo Lopez-Chavez, 30 — who originally identified himself to authorities as Juan Garza — faces charges of second-degree riot and terroristic threats, both felonies. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

About 10 p.m. July 28, 2007, a 911 call was made about a fight in progress at a trailer park in Winnebago. Soon, another 911 call was made from the same residence about a stabbing.

Authorities found Miguel Angel Lopez, 27, in a pool of blood in the driveway. He was pronounced dead at 11:04 p.m.

Those involved in the fight — according to testimony and the court complaint — were Lopez, Lopez-Chavez, Gonzalez and Jose Gomez, Gonzalez’s uncle.

Gomez initially was charged with aiding an offender and obstructing the investigation for murder in the second degree, as well as the same offense in the third degree. Those charges were dismissed and Gomez — also known as Adrian Aguilar — was sent to Mower County for an outstanding warrant, and to face Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Lopez-Chavez allegedly used a carjack pipe and a broken bottle during the fight. The others used belts and bottles until Gonzalez used a serrated knife to stab Miguel Lopez.

Hector Carrillo Carbajal, 25, and Louis Alberto Sanchez, 32, were standing outside the trailer when law enforcement arrived. The complaint states Carbajal used a stick, and both were making threats of violence.

Police believe Lopez-Chavez is an illegal alien with felony charges and is a flight risk.

What a nice bunch of people coming to our country. We certainly need them to assimilate!
