OHIO COUNTY -- Illegal immigrants were discovered after a traffic stop in Ohio County early Tuesday.

Authorities made a routine traffic stop on West Alexander Road and found four suspected illegal immigrants inside the vehicle, police said.

All four were taken to the Northern Regional Jail and federal immigration authorities were contacted.

Ohio County Sheriff Tom Burgoyne said the number of illegals detained locally has federal authorities taking notice.

He said almost 100 illegals immigrants have been detained in the area over the past few months.

The four taken into custody told deputies that they were headed to a city along Interstate 79 for work. One had a South Carolina driver's license and an insurance card.

Burgoyne said the way to combat the illegals is to punish their employers.
