NEWARK, N.J. (AP)
_ Federal immigration authorities arrested twice as many illegal immigrants in New Jersey this year compared to last year, according to new figures released Tuesday by federal authorities.

Of the 2,079 people arrested on immigration charges during the fiscal year, 270 had criminal histories in addition to being in the country illegally, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.

By the end of September, 1,220 of those arrested had been deported.

Immigration authorities came under scrutiny this summer after a suspect in the slaying of three college students in Newark was found to be an illegal immigrant who had been arrested previously on aggravated assault and child sexual assault charges.
